Yes, there are free lunches in Thessaloniki

That evening we went to a Bazooka club, but none is as original and Greek as the one in Athens. The dance floor had flashing lights but still the singing and dancing, wine and cola were the same. The Greek dancing is so trance like and almost slow motion, it is unselfconscious and free, in a restricted way. It reminds me of a Bacchus rite. We got "home" at 2.30am, had a milk based coffee and went to sleep. The next day we went sight seeing. We made our way to the sea front and the White tower. It is a Byzantine tower that has been turned into a museum for Byzantine art. I found the tower more interesting than the art, although I liked the painting of Mary and Jesus with the Saints in bright colors. The painting had oriental overtones as they sat in the lotus position and their hands are placed as if in meditation, also some of them look like they are wearing turbans, they have dark skin and their eyes are slanted. It was a cold, grey drizzling rain of a day, and we walked up the coast line towards the Agata Road. Jay walking is the norm here and if a car is at a red light and the people don't start walking straight away the cars drive on by. Then our host treated us to lunch is the University student's dinning room, actually the lunch was free. All students in Greece get a free hot meal! So we walked in, had a tray of chicken, veg and rice shoved at us, and chowed down, it was rather tasty. Now we know the trick if we are ever starving. Then we headed "home" for an afternoon nap.
