The train to Yugslavia in 1991

(The last 2 Blogs got mixed up).

Perhaps I should outline my expectations of Yugoslavia: cheap, poor, socialist, communist, lacking in the good things in life. And now the reality. From the train we could see rolling hills and snow covered mountains, with quaint log cabins and fire wood neatly stacked outside. Crossing the boarder was a simple passport check, while the train stayed in motion. The sun beamed into our compartment while the snow reflected the sun back against the frost covered windows. And next to us a Greek slowly turned orange as he applied self sun tanning lotion, to prepare himself for a Yugoslavian ski resort. He kept looking at himself in the mirror and fidgeting about. We were dressed like l;layered cakes once again: me in stockings, long-johns,jeans,T-shirt,2 sweaters/Jerseys, coat, socks, gloves and balaclava, all this to make our bags lighter. I missed all the friends we had made in Naoussa and Thessaloniki, but our next stop was getting closer and we started to wonder what Skopje would be like.
